1999 - The end of the world

1998-99 was my first endeavor to make money. It was the golden time for the internet. 28k dial up access and all. Ok so how did I not make money in that year:

Alladvantage, bepaid, adsomething r other - In case these don't ring a bell. You sign up and put an ad on your computer and it monitors when you surf the web. You get paid something ridiculously small an hour and there are limits to how many hours. I made $12.50!!!!!!!!! after only two months and it only took 40 hours! The money was in the referrals though and people were making thousands. Good for them. I worked my head off trying to get referrals. I would go into chat rooms and random IM people and try to get them to sign up. I got like 2 people and yes it felt really great, but it was spamming and I'm lucky I didn't get reported. (what the hell, I thought email was spamming, not talking to people). For some reason these sites went bust. I'm no marketer, but I can think of two reasons. The referral system got too flippin large and they were showing ads to the people doing this cheap thing. It's like advertising to homeless people. You aren't going to make a sale.
